Important habits for college students
itstimtime asked: What would you say are the three most important habits a college student should develop for success in the real world? Hey, Tim! What a great question. You’ve given me a lot to think about – just what are the threemost important habits for college students to cultivate? I made a list of five, and then honed it down to that magic number…three. Here goes. I bet you’ll chuckle when you read the first one, because it’s something that is said to everybody during their teens. Parents, grandparents, and teachers all tell you to… Cultivate discipline. Parts of that include “being accountable” and “managing your time well.” Yes, have fun; but balance the fun with constructive time. These four years will fly by, and if you just have fun, you’ll be left with less than you deserve: memories of good times, with few, if any, building blocks for future success. The second habit? Be a forward-thinker. That involves planning for the future, not just living day-to-day. What ARE you going to do when you graduate? Be specific! Where do you want to be five years after you wear your cap and gown and receive your degree? Again, be specific. And finally, number three… Cultivate valuable relationships. It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you. Naturally, you want to have friendships, but you also want to network with those people who can help you realize your goals. Determine who those leaders are, and build strong relationships with them – so they can be a part of your success! Thanks, Tim, for asking. I look forward to reading your “take” on my answer.
